Altinkum-Didim

Altinkum-Didim is a merger of two smaller resorts which lies in the South-West of Turkey on the north shore of the gulf of Güllük - opposite the Bodrum peninsula villages of Torba, Türkbükü and Yalıkavak.

The district consists of Didim which is a coastal town of 26,000, Altınkum (which means golden sand, Sarıkum (yellow sand)), Gümüşkum (silver sand). This coast has thus become a very popular holiday resort and is genuinely attractive with clear blue sea, ancient ruins and its own microclimate, with hundreds of days of sun every year allowing residents to enjoy the famous beaches and watersports even in January. With its yacht marina the village of Akbük is one of Didim's most elegant.

While tourism is the main source of income for the area, agriculture is also an important contributor, with wheat and cotton, sheep and goats, raised in the area.

As Didim is so well-situated many people from large cities around Turkey, especially Ankara, have bought holiday homes, apartments, and villas in the area. Property values are now rising dramatically and the building boom continues as foreign buyers, especially the families of Turks living and working in Europe, take this benefit. Since the turn of the millenium British people have bought holiday homes in Didim, now with a community of many thousands, and you will often see the Union Jack around Didim, especially in the bars.

The construction of the new fifty million dollar Didim D Marina is expected to encourage further tourism and rising property prices in the area. Development of the third beach area in Altinkum has already begun with an expected completion date of 2009.

Places of interest include the impressive Ionic Temple of Apollo. Lake Bafa national park is nearby, along with the Büyük Menderes River and historic sites such as the temple of Serapis, Miletos and Priene.

The World Health Council recommends the resort of Altinkum because of its lovely climate, low rate of humidity and sand. Altinkum is also a good place to live for asthma sufferers due to its clean atmosphere. With something to suit everyone, families and couples, young or old will enjoy Altinkum as the sights come to life every night with Turkish music, belly dancers, and all the sights and sounds of this bustling resort.

It will not surprise you that over 11,000 homes have been sold to British people in Altinkum-Didim since 2002 – the hospitable people of these two towns are ready to welcome you at any time to its great beaches and relaxed lifestyle.
